Inter wing-back Matteo Darmian has shared his belief that he and his Inter teammates deserved something more than they got out of their Champions League group stage opener at home to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Inter took the lead shortly after half time but heading into the final few minutes of the game they found themselves trailing 2-1 to the Bundesliga side.

Romelu Lukaku however saved the day for Inter late on and both sides have come away from the match at San Siro with a point each.

“For what we saw tonight, we deserved something more. We wanted to win because we know how much it is important to start well in the Champions League, but we are sorry because we are commenting on a draw that I think is tough,” Darmian explained in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sport Mediaset, following the full time whistle in Milan.

The former Manchester United player then proceeded to add: “In the second half the match was bad, we were good at reacting.

“The performance was there because we entered with the right desire and determination. Was it a lost opportunity? We wanted to win, we gave it our all.

“Unfortunately this draw has arrived, we are sorry but we must immediately think about the next one.”

Darmian joined Inter at the end of the most recent Summer transfer window in a loan with obligation to buy deal from Parma.

He was drafted into the starting line-up at short notice tonight after Achraf Hakimi returned a positive COVID-19 test and in his first appearance for Inter Darmian managed to grab an assist.
