Borussia Monchengladbach attacker Jonas Hofmann has admitted to being disappointed that he and his teammates only managed to pick up a single point from their Champions League group stage opener against Inter on Wednesday night.

Inter took the lead just after half time but Borussia Monchengladbach were quick to react and drew themselves level around the hour mark. Hofmann then scored what looked to be a winner for the visitors at San Siro with six minutes left of normal time but Romelu Lukaku scored with just minutes to spare to rescue a draw for Inter.

“The last few minutes were an exciting roller coaster. After my goal, it took me forever to realise we could have won the game. Before the match, few people thought we could score points against Inter,” Hofmann explained in an interview with Borussia Monchengladbach’s official club website.

He then spoke on his disappointment: “I have to say that I am a little disappointed that we only got a point. After the 2-1 we tried to keep the lead but we couldn’t defend on that corner. There is bitterness.”

The German, who formerly played for Borussia Dortmund, then spoke on the importance of the penalty that they received: “It was decisive for how things went.”

The 28-year-old proceeded to discuss Inter’s game plan against them and spoke on how he felt he and teammates dealt with Lukaku.

“At the start of the game we weren’t playing as offensively as we would have liked, maybe we weren’t playing bravely enough.

“Inter’s game was 99% of the time playing the ball to Lukaku. It was sometimes difficult to position two men, one behind and one in front of Lukaku but we did it quite well, in my opinion our defenders did a great job. In the end, as a team, we deserved to take a point.”
