Legendary Italian football manager Arrigo Sacchi has shared his belief that Inter were deserving of more from their Champions League group stage opener against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Inter largely dominated the match at San Siro on Wednesday night and deservedly took the lead shortly after the half time interval. Borussia Monchengladbach scored two goals and looked set to record an unexpected win but Romelu Lukaku rescued a late draw for Inter.

“Antonio Conte’s Inter drew with the strong Borussia Mönchengladbach. They deserved the victory but the team still can’t have concentrate for the whole 90 minutes,” Sacchi explained in an editorial piece for Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, which appeared in yesterday’s print edition.

“The two goals scored by the Germans were a gift from Inter. The penalty could have been avoided and a lack of coverage allowed the second goal.”

Sacchi, who is perhaps best known for his trophy filled spell in charge of AC Milan, then spoke on how Inter’s approach for this match different to their approach for last weekend’s Derby della Madonnina loss to AC Milan.

“The will of Inter and their play was better than the meeting with AC Milan. The Nerazzurri interpreted the meeting with more order and organisation.

“In the first half both teams studied each other and were careful. In the second, the Nerazzurri started strong and scored through the great Lukaku.

“Then the team began to stretch and give space to fearsome opponents. The attention levels dropped . Inter hit the post after Lautaro’s beautiful volley then came the penalty in favour of Borussia. Then another mistake that favoured the Germans who got their second goal.

“Inter reacted by showing character and quality, so much so that in a few minutes they equalised and came close to scoring with Darmian.”

Sacchi concluded his column by going on to highlight some of the performances of the Inter players in their match against Borussia Monchengladbach.

“Lukaku was a phenomenon, there was a slight awakening from Eriksen and there were good performances from Kolarov and Darmian. The good, generous and impetuous Vidal perhaps more of an assault than of judgment.”
