Belgian national team manager Roberto Martinez has sang the praises of Inter striker Romelu Lukaku and labelled him as the best striker in the world.

“For me, Romelu is the best striker in the world, but I’m biased. It’s a matter of taste and what is important to you in a striker,” the former Everton boss explained in an interview with Belgian news outlet Sporza.

“But if you have a number nine who can play with his back to goal, is strong in duels and in the air, who can run in behind  the defence, act as a pivot and score, then that is a number nine I would choose and that’s Romelu.”

Martinez then went on to discuss how much he thinks Lukaku’s transfer to Inter in the Summer of 2019 has changed him as a player.

“His stats over the last few years with the Red Devils have been extraordinary but his move to Serie A gave him an extra layer of responsibility at club level.

“His goal is to win the Scudetto in Italy and you can see it from his commitment, his determination and the pleasure with which he plays.

“I’m not surprised he scores so much, because he’s the best. He is also proving that he is at the peak of his career.”

Lukaku joined Inter in a club record €65 million deal from Manchester United and in his near 18 months with the club, he has been absolutely prolific.

The 27-year-old, who holds the record for most goals scored for the Belgian national team, has made 57 appearances across all competitions for the club, in which he has scored 41 goals and provided six assists for his teammates.

This season the former Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion player has made six appearances, in which he has scored seven goals.
