Inter centre back Stefan de Vrij has shared his disappointment following Inter’s goalless draw away to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League group stage earlier on this evening.

“It’s a shame we couldn’t win the game, we came here to do it but we couldn’t,” he explained in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, following the full time whistle at the Kyiv Olympic Stadium.

“We came here to snatch a good result, but at least we didn’t concede any goals and that’s important. If you can’t win at least you have to draw.”

He was then asked about whether this result is proof of Inter’s increasing maturity as a team seeing as they limited Shakhtar Donetsk to very little in the way of chances and kept a clean sheet for the second consecutive match.

“We knew it would be a different game compared to the one of August, the performance was there, they defended well and did not create anything, this is definitely a good sign.”

The former Lazio defender was then asked what Inter need to do in their upcoming Champions League group stage double header with group favourites Real Madrid.

“We must try to win as we always do, even against a great team like Real Madrid. These two games are now gone and we will try to win the next ones.”

This season the 28-year-old, who was named the best defender in Serie A last season, has made five appearances across all competitions to date. During his 450 minutes on the field, the Dutch national team player has failed to make any goal contributions.
