Inter came in to this game with some decent confidence as they had beaten Shakhtar 5-0 in a European Semi-Final not so long ago.

However from the moment they had lions share of the ball, they refused to try another method to try and break down a resolute Shakhtar defence that stayed compact and deep.

Conte made his subs too late as usual and now Inter’s chances on going through to the next round depend on taking some points of Real Madrid:

Samir Handanovic – 6: Just one save to make in the first half along with a nice punch to a free kick. Even lesser work to do in the second as Shakhtar were in their half.

Danilo D’Ambrosio – 6: Did a lot of work in attack especially in the first half. Not much tough defending to do throughout the game. Attacking is not his best attribute.

Stefan De Vrij – 6 : Still looks a little rusty and off the pace. Shakhtar did not pose much of a problem for Stefan. Began a lot of moves and found his teammates well

Alessandro Bastoni – 6: Caught out of position a couple of times and had to get a silly booking on one of the occasions. Passing and positioning always getting better.

Achraf Hakimi – 5.5: Shakhtar ensured his flank was always well guarded. Inter attacked mostly from the right but Hakimi did not get that space he always craves for.

Marcelo Brozovic – 6.5: Much better game from Marcelo. Managed to pierce the opponent’s high defensive line many times. Unfortunately, the chances were not converted.

Arturo Vidal – 6: Full of running and won a lot of possession. Played in a different role tonight. Made his presence felt on both ends of the pitch. Unlucky booking

Nicolo Barella – 6.5: In Europe he reminds Interisti of Dejan Stankovic. That shot that hit the cross bar was very reminiscent of the Inter Legend. Quality and quantity.

Ashley Young – 6: Wonderful to see Young back from illness and straight into the starting lineup. Whenever his teammates found him, he created dangerous openings

Romelu Lukaku – 6: So now Lukaku can take free kicks as well? Romelu is enjoying this run of form and long may it continue. Could and should have had a brace tonight.

Lautaro Martinez – 5: Lautaro continued like he was against Genoa, battled hard but nothing fell his way. When it clicks for him looks wonderful, the opposite is also true

Ivan Perisic – 5: Conte tried to use Perisic as he would use Alexis Sanchez had the Chilean been available. What Perisic showed was there is a clear difference.

Christian Eriksen – N/A: Could not get involved in the game at all. Should have been brought on earlier and maybe would have made a telling pass to unlock Shakhtar defense.

Matteo Darmian – N/A: Brought on for a tiring DD and in his 3rd game he already played in 3 different positions. As Eriksen should have been brought on much earlier.

Andrea Pinamonti – N/A: Just thrown on in hope that something might fall to him. It was not that kind of night for him. Maybe Conte could have kept Lautaro on. 3-man attack?

Antonio Conte – 5: It is not Conte’s fault that Sanchez was not available for the game that was tailor made for him, but the subs came too late and could not make an impact

Georgi Kabakov – 5.5: Vidal should not have been booked and Kabakov should have at least taken a walk to see the foul on Lukaku in the box. Overall, just an ok performance

Inter – 5: The qualification to the round of 16 is already looking tough for Inter now as the next 2 games are against Real Madrid. Did not have the killer instinct.
