Legendary Inter central midfielder Esteban Cambiasso has stressed that Inter must concern themselves with their own performances rather than the performances of the other teams in their Champions League group after their goalless draw against Shakhtar Donetsk.
“Inter showed safety, the last step was missing. There were many positive aspects, even if they could have also won the match given what they created,” he explained whilst present in the studios of Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, following the match.
“Inter have to deal with themselves and think about their own performances. They lacked a bit of brilliance in the final third, the opponents put a line of four defenders and a line of five midfielders to block their advances..”
He then went on to discuss the performance of compatriot Lautaro Martinez, who missed a golden opportunity to give Inter a lead early on in the second half of the match at the Kyiv Olympic Stadium.
“He didn’t have many opportunities to get himself into the thick of the game. When he is in the zone he will score just when getting once chance, but I think given the chances created Inter could have won this way. Inter played perfect defensively.
“The performance gave positive feelings. There is regret, but it is worse when the team hurts. Inter didn’t suffered a shot on goal and it’s not an easy thing to do in Europe.”
In conclusion he spoke on how things will differ for Inter between this match and their next Champions League group stage match which comes away to Real Madrid at the start of next month.
“Real will leave you more space to attack but in the attacking phase they will create many more problems. Inter must pay utmost attention in all matches but from today to a week anything can happen.”
Cambiasso spent a decade with Inter between 2004 and 2014 and is widely regarded as one of the club’s greatest ever midfielders.
During his trophy filled time on the books of the Nerazzurri club, the former Real Madrid player made 431 appearances across all competitions, in which he scored 51 goals and tallied 34 assists.
