Former Inter striker Diego Milito discussed Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez and his performances this season in an interview with Argentine media outlet TyC Sports a few days ago.

“Lautaro is far from his peak, but he is still young and has a lot to learn. He needs to continue to improve but logically he will mature. Then he is in a good team that will allow him to continue to grow.

“He plays for Inter, an elite team, accompanied by an excellent coach like Antonio Conte. He has at his side valuable teammates and the team fights for important goals. He is happy, the last time I spoke with him he was well.”

Finally, Milito also noted how the 23-year-old is set to be a star for the Argentinian national team.

“He’s doing well, at ease. He gets along very well with Lionel Messi and the rest of his teammates.

“He is doing well even if they haven’t worked as hard as the other national teams. But I’m sure he will be Argentina’s number 9 for a long time.”

The 23-year-old Lautaro, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2023, started the season well under coach Antonio Conte, scoring three goals and providing one assist in the first three games.

His form dropped slightly and he failed to score in the Milanese club’s first two Champions League games.

Inter are currently in talks with the player and his entourage, discussing a contract renewal. CEO Beppe Marotta is hoping that negotiations conclude before December, with his €111 million release clause likely to be removed.

Last season, Lautaro made 49 appearances across all competitions, for a total of 3595 minutes. In that time, he scored 21 goals and provided seven assists.
