Former Empoli and Brescia manager Luigi ‘Gigi’ Cagni has shared his belief that Inter manager Antonio Conte is not currently acting like himself at the moment.

Conte took charge of Inter in the Summer of 2019 and in his first season in charge he led Inter to a second place finish in Serie A and the Europa League final, which they lost 3-2. This season has not started as expected though with Conte leading his side to just three wins in their opening nine games.

“All coaches can make mistakes. We live in a country where you have to get results and it means that you cannot lose,” the 70-year-old, who last managed Brescia back in 2017, explained in an interview with Italian radio station TMW Radio on Wednesday afternoon.

Cagni proceeded to discuss the problems which he believes former Juventus and Italian national team boss has at the moment and shared what he thinks the 51-year-old must do.

“He is more concerned about the judgments they make about him and his outbursts. Instead, he needs to get results. He must not lose. You gain certainty if you do not lose just like you get merit when you won but he has faults right now.

“He is wrong. Obviously he is not himself. He has to go back to doing what he is capable of, because he is good and has shown it. He is not himself at this moment but must get out of it and not go around blaming others but himself.”

Cagni also came to the defence of Inter wing-back Achraf Hakimi who has been criticised for his mistake in the Champions League loss to Real Madrid earlier on this week.

“They blamed Hakimi for the defeat but he wasn’t the only one wrong. What did the other defenders do? There had to be support. It’s not just his fault.”
