Legendary Inter central defender Riccardo Ferri has shared his belief that Inter’s performance in their 3-2 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League group stage earlier on this week was very reminiscent of their performances in Serie A this season.
Inter fell 2-0 behind but were able to get themselves back level. They had chances to score a third but did not take them, unlike Real Madrid who grabbed a late winner.
“Inter’s performance was very similar to that of their performances in the league in that they were very attacking, created many chances and played with a very high defensive line,” he explained whilst present in the studios of Italian broadcaster Sport Mediaset, on Wednesday afternoon.
“If there is one thing that catches the eye, it is the many goals conceded, besides Hakimi’s mistake on the first goal there are also others due to the incorrect positioning of the defence.
“These goals are weighing heavily on a team that is very productive from midfield upwards. There is often no preventive marking, there are situations that are repeated from the beginning of the season. There is no balance.”
Ferri came through the youth ranks at Inter and spent 13 years of his senior playing career as part of the Inter first team before making a transfer to Sampdoria, where he spent the final seasons of his career.
During his time with Inter, the now 57-year-old, made no less than 418 appearances across all competitions, during which he scored nine goals and provided a single assist for his teammates. He also won one Serie A title and two UEFA Cups whilst with Inter.
