Legendary Inter captain and central defender Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Bergomi has shared his thoughts and feelings on Inter’s performance in Sunday’s 1-1 draw away to Atalanta.

Lautaro Martinez gave Inter the lead around the hour mark but his goal was cancelled out about 20 minutes later when Aleksei Miranchuk pulled the hosts level at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo.

“Bastoni is doing well but did not go high up the pitch at Atalanta’s goal. Since they have conceded a lot of goals when they have gone high up the pitch, they were worried about conceding,” he explained in an interview whilst present in the studios of Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, during their ‘Sky Calcio Club’ broadcast.

“The mentality is to steal the ball up high and go and score and win the game. I asked Antonio about the defence and he said they are more attacking.

“He wants to play Perisic, Hakimi, the two strikers, Vidal and Eriksen. He wants to try to be more attacking and have the defence play high but they weren’t being fast, because they interpreted things well, and now they are worried.

“The game exploded after the Inter goal, opportunities arose there. Inter don’t have players who beat their man, but they are a strong team.”

Bergomi was then asked whether he expected to see more from Alexis Sanchez this season after he completed a permanent switch to Inter following a successful loan spell last season.

“In my opinion he had his best years at Arsenal when he started out on the left then when he went to Manchester United, he began to no longer be what he was.”

Former Italian national team player Bergomi spent the entirety of his playing career on Inter’s books and has made the second most appearances of all time in an Inter shirt with only Javier Zanetti having appeared more for Inter than Bergomi did.
