Noted Italian football journalist Mario Sconcerti has revealed that he thinks the reason that Serie A has been so balanced so far this season is because of how poor the Summer transfer window was.

Just five points currently separate eighth placed Hellas Verona from league leaders AC Milan with all the sides in between only within a point or two of one another, something that has come as a real surprise to many.

“The balance in the league is due to a transfer market that has never been so poor,” Sconcerti explained in an interview with Italian news outlet CalcioMercato.com.

“For now the only new signings who have made an impact are Morata and Pedro. It was a poor market because there was no money, everyone had to sell first and then buy and that goes for everyone, including Juve and Inter.

Sconcerti then went on to look at the changes that both Juventus and Inter, the two sides widely expected to fight it out for the Serie A title, have made, with him paying particular attention to Antonio Conte’s Nerazzurri.

“If we look at the new Juve, only Kulusevski and Morata who replaces Higuain are different. Inter more. The whole clarification market led to only one real exchange, Hakimi for Candreva, bought with Icardi’s money. In Bergamo in the initial formation the only new one was Darmian, in the final one Perisic.

Sconcerti concluded by sharing his belief that it was not just the poor transfer market that has contributed to the balance seen in Serie A at the early stage of this campaign.

“Inter are full of expensive players that they failed to sell because no one could pay their salaries. This really created the balance, the new ‘poverty’, together with Pirlo’s inexperience and Conte’s confusion.”
