Belgian national team manager Roberto Martinez has shared his belief that Inter and Belgian national team forward Romelu Lukaku is at the peak of his footballing powers.

“My relationship with Romelu was from a young player when he came to Everton on loan. Then we made a massive effort to get him on a permanent basis and he was the transfer record at that time,” he explained in an interview with British media outlet talkSPORT.

“You can see the player going through phases, good moments, bad moments, but what we’ve seen with Romelu is he’s never lost his outstanding quality which is scoring goals. Now we’ve seen a real maturity in his play.”

Martinez then went on to discuss Lukaku’s spell at Manchester United and how he was treated there and how things have changed for him since his transfer to Inter in the Summer of 2019.

“The time he had at Manchester United, he was so desperate to win trophies and he took a lot of responsibility on his shoulders and probably took a lot of blame, in my eyes, very unfairly.

“But going to Italy, he’s in the middle of a new project, he’s taken that responsibility and those difficulties he had in England in a good way. The player we have now is a player in the best maturity moment of his career.”

Since joining Inter, in what was a club record transfer for the Nerazzurri club, Lukaku has been simply sensational and absolutely prolific in front of goal.

The 27-year-old has made 59 appearances across all competitions to date for the club, in which he has scored 41 goals and provided six assists for his teammates. This season he has made eight appearances and scored seven goals.

The former Chelsea striker is also the Belgian national team’s record all time goal scorer with him having scored 57 goals in 89 appearances.
