Legendary Inter defender and club captain Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Bergomi has shared his belief that Inter are the favourites to go all the way and win this season’s Serie A title.

“Who will win the Scudetto? Today it is very difficult to make a prediction. Compared to recent years, the gap between Juve and the others has narrowed and the race for the Scudetto will see more teams involved. Juve are used to winning, but Inter must believe so I say Inter,” Bergomi, who spent the entirety of his playing career with Inter, told Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, which appeared in today’s print edition of the Milanese news outlet.

Bergomi then spoke on the current standings which rather surprisingly see AC Milan leading the way and both Juventus and Inter lagging behind in fifth and seventh place respectively after seven games played.

“AC Milan will hold until the end but Conte and Pirlo will rise, they have everything to fight for the title. Conte is a leader and a coach who makes the difference.”

He then spoke on other sides who could potentially challenge for the Serie A title in Napoli and Roma: “Napoli? They too are in the Scudetto race, while I think Roma can be considered as a true outsider for the title.”

In conclusion Bergomi sang the praises of Inter striker Romelu Lukaku, who has five goals in six Serie A appearances to date this season: “Lukaku is the most decisive player in the league, we have all seen what it means to have him on the pitch and not on the pitch.”

Bergomi came through the ranks at Inter and made 754 appearances across all competitions for the club, an appearance total bettered only by Javier Zanetti.
