Legendary Inter defender Riccardo Ferri has hit out at Inter for their lack of intensity in their recent UEFA Champions League group stage defeat to Real Madrid.

Inter shot themselves in the foot almost immediately when they gave away a penalty which Eden Hazard duly put in the back of the net.

The Nerazzurri really struggled to get into the game and things were only made more difficult when Arturo Vidal was sent off. In the second half Inter looked a little better but ultimately could not recover and would concede again with Rodrygo scoring just seconds after coming on for the visitors.

“The attitude should have been that of a final. Instead the impression was that of an attitude equal to that seen in the first half with Torino, a team without intensity,” Ferri explained in an interview with Italian broadcaster Italia 1 on Thursday afternoon.

“Real Madrid have shown themselves to be a team. Inter must do mea culpa, it is clear that the red to Vidal provides a mitigating factor.”

The former Italian national team player, who spent all barring a few years of his career on Inter’s books, then spoke on Inter manager Antonio Conte.

“Conte was stuck on the bench? These are games that bring motivation alone, there is no need to look at the manager.

“There is no need for indications from the bench, the match was prepared in advance and you go on the pitch against a great opponent.”

He also shared his view on Lucas Vazquez’s tackle on Inter’s Roberto Gagliardini: “It was a clear penalty on Gagliardini.”
