Legendary Italian football manager has shared his belief that Real Madrid were deserved winners over Inter in Wednesday night’s UEFA Champions League group stage encounter between the two sides at San Siro.

The visitors ran out 2-0 winners over Inter, who almost immediately made life difficult for themselves when Nicolo Barella gave away a penalty which Eden Hazard scored.

Things got even more difficult for Inter around the half hour mark of the game as Arturo Vidal was sent off and it got even harder when Real Madrid’s scored their second goal via Rodrygo in the second half.

“Real Madrid’s domination in the first 20 minutes was embarrassing,” he began his column which appeared in yesterday’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Real Madrid hit the post and missed a chance which allowed Inter to still hope but, on a bad evening, Barella’s mistake that gave Real Madrid the penalty and Vidal’s outrageous attitude towards the referee, with the resulting sending off, the condemnation was sealed.”

Sacchi, who is perhaps best known for his highly successful time in charge of AC Milan in the late 1980s and early 1990s, then spoke on why he thinks what happened to Inter on Wednesday happened.

“The cause of this debacle is not them, but an excessively cautious and fearful attitude. European teams, in general, are better at attacking than defending.”

“Real Madrid were allowed to do the things that they know best which is technique, ball possession, initiative, without suffering and much less pressing.

“The Nerazzurri gave up the domination of the midfield to Real Madrid, who also had a numerical advantage.”

In conclusion Sacchi shared his view on Inter manager Antonio Conte: “He is a great coach, only he can make sense of this team.”
