Former Inter manager Rino Marchesi has shared his belief that the Nerazzurri can compete to win the Serie A title this season alongside two other clubs.

Inter currently sit in second place in the Serie A table after nine games played. They have collected 18 points from a possible 27 having won five, drawn three and lost one and are trailing current league leaders and city rivals AC Milan by a total of five points.

“Can Inter win the Scudetto? At the beginning of the season we all said it. For sure Inter can compete with Napoli and Juventus.

“They score many goals but they have had some problems at the back but they must be taken into consideration,” he explained in an interview with Italian radio station Radio Anch’io Lo Sport which took place earlier on today.

He then went on to discuss some other clubs who are doing well and spoke on the rules this season which allow teams to make five substitutions.

“There are teams like Hellas Verona and Sassuolo who are doing very well. It is true that the teams involved in the cups use up more energy, but they also have the squads to be able to take advantage of the five substitutions. I believe that in the long run this will make the difference.”

Marchesi, who also managed both Juventus and Napoli, then expressed his stance on whether Serie A should be reduced to 18 teams from the current 20.

“I am in favour since there are many commitments. There is a risk though of penalising the little teams who work for years and years to get to Serie A.”

Marchesi managed Inter between July 1982 and June 1983. He managed the club in 47 matches across all competitions to date, of which he won 20, drew 17 and lost the other 10.
