Inter club captain and number one goalkeeper Samir Handanovic has shared his belief that he and his teammates could have killed off the game earlier in their penultimate UEFA Champions League group stage match away to Borussia Monchengladbach.

“The weather conditions were the same for both teams. It was a tough game, in which we suffered, but without pain there is no love, especially at this level where you suffer the most,” he explained in an interview with Inter’s official club broadcaster Inter TV at the end of the match in Germany.

“The important thing is that we were a team and won and this is what counts. We have created a lot, we could have killed the game off earlier.

“Unfortunately we weren’t able to do it before going on to complicate our lives, but the team performance was there.”

Asked about Borussia Monchengladbach’s third goal which was chopped off due to a player being offside, Handanovic responded: “I don’t know if their goal that was cancelled out was fate or not, I didn’t see the ball at the time of the shot.

“The referee made the right decision.”

In conclusion the veteran Slovenian shot-stopper, who has been with Inter since 2012, was asked whether Inter’s Champions League fate is now back in their own hands or not heading into next week’s group stage finale with Shakhtar Donetsk.

“Not yet. We have to think about Bologna first and take one step at a time, then we will think about the Champions League against Shakhtar.”

Since arriving at Inter from fellow Serie A side Udinese, Handanovic has went on to represent the club on no less than 356 occasions across all competitions to date, in which he has managed to keep a total of 125 clean sheets.
