Inter manager Antonio Conte has shared his delight with the performance put in and spirit shown against Borussia Monchengladbach in their 3-2 away win in their penultimate UEFA Champions League group stage clash.

“It was a match that we absolutely had to win to stay alive in the competition against a team that has proved to be strong.

“It was a deserved win, we had many chances to score goals,” he began an interview with Inter’s official club broadcaster Inter TV following the match at Borussia Park.

“It was an important game that makes us grow, now we have a game against Shakhtar who we have no option but to win against and hope that the other match is not a draw.”

The former Juventus and Italian national team manager was then asked if he was happy with how his team reacted to the difficulties that they faced during the match in Germany.

“Yes and I am very happy with the performance and the spirit with which we faced this match. We put them in great difficulty, they also changed their system several times but when we did things with quality and precision we were very good at putting them in great difficulty.

“We missed a few steps at the end of the first half and they picked up their morale. The goal we conceded at the last second of the first half could have killed anyone but the boys were good at playing the same and with the same desire.

“We could also have suffered less but congratulations to the boys, we are alive and we could be dead. These are fundamental points for the Champions League and Europe.”

In conclusion the 51-year-old manager was asked about the two consecutive wins that his team have achieved, firstly against Sassuolo at the weekend and now against Borussia Monchengladbach.

“If I’m not mistaken, Sassuolo hadn’t suffered even one defeat in the league and they were ahead of us in the standings and we had a great performance.

“Borussia were the team in the best form in the group and they are a very balanced group. Coming here and playing how we did means that there are moral and technical values and an organisation.

“We must continue on this path knowing that we have to focus and rely only on ourselves.”

Conte is into his second year in charge of Inter, who he is under contract with until the end of next season. He has managed the club in 67 games across all competitions to date and led Inter to a total of 38 wins.
