In today’s print edition, Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport have criticised referee Danny Makkelie for the number of yellow cards that he dished out in last night’s UEFA Champions League group stage match between Borussia Monchengladbach and Inter.

The Dutchman handed out no less than nine yellow cards during the match at Borussia Park but not all of these bookings were justified and the report states that Makkelie was a bit too severe when it came to brandishing bookings in the match, which Inter won 3-2.

Whilst critical of the way he went about carding players, the report does however praise him for the number of situations that he did get right starting with ignoring Borussia Monchengladbach’s calls for a penalty near the end of the first half when Lars Stindl went to ground after a very slight push from Alessandro Bastoni.

Makkelie also rightly waved play on when the ball came off of Stefan Laimer’s arm. Whilst it did touch Laimer’s arm, his arm was connected to his body.

Makkelie then rightly chopped off Borussia Monchengladbach’s third goal of the game for offside after examining the footage on the VAR screen.
