Inter coach Antonio Conte’s decision to return to his traditional 3-5-2 system has greatly benefitted defender Stefan de Vrij, according to a report from Italian media outlet PassioneInter.com earlier today.

The report details how the Italian coach’s decision to change the formation to a 3-4-1-2 with the inclusion of a trequartista put heavy pressure on the 28-year-old Dutch defender.

The player is very good at reading situations and predicting movements but has a lack of pace and struggled playing in the unbalanced system, which regularly put him in a numerical disadvantage.

With the return of the classic 3-5-2, De Vrij has been able to show his best and his confidence has returned, giving confidence to the rest of the defense as a whole.

Due to his qualities, when the Dutchman is playing well, the rest of the team can play a little more relaxed, knowing they have a strong and smart defender behind them.
