Italian football journalist Luca Marchegiani has shared his belief that Inter manager Antonio Conte’s recent treatment of Christian Eriksen is due to him wanting to involve the Dane rather than be provocative.

In Inter’s last three matches, Conte has brought on Eriksen for the final few minutes of games, something which has seen him heavily criticised with many seeing the treatment of the struggling attacking midfielder to be unfair.

Speaking in the studios of Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia yesterday afternoon, Marchegiani expressed his own views on Conte’s treatment of Eriksen.

He said: “I have too much respect for Conte to think that there it is provocative behaviour towards the player. Rather I think he wants to involve him in some way.

“I think, indeed, that Eriksen should worry about the fact that someone like Conte does not consider him, when, in fact, he is a useful player. Conte tried to insert him and it’s also legitimate to make choices.”

Marchegiani then went on to share his thoughts on the possibility of Real Madrid and Borussia Monchengladbach drawing on Wednesday, a result that would stop Inter from qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League even if they were to beat Shakhtar Donetsk.

“I don’t think Real-Borussia will reach the 60th minute goalless. If there have been goals, it is more difficult to say ‘enough’.”

He also touched upon the rotation seen in the Inter team in recent matches: “In the last three games, Conte has managed the squad well and it is also true that he is finally starting to have everyone available after Covid.

“The rotation of Darmian and Hakimi and Young and Perisic has been been done well and is good for everyone.”
