Nicolo Barella could potentially make it onto the bench or even start in tonight’s UEFA Champions League group stage match at home to Shakhtar Donetsk according to recent Italian media reports.

As per Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the Italian national team central midfielder’s condition is much improved compared to 36 hours ago and he will train prior to the match to see how his ankle holds up.

Depending on how he feels he may not play at all but could sensationally even make it onto the bench or start. In the event he is unable to start, Christian Eriksen will play in the starting line-up.

Gazzetta dello Sport have meanwhile stated that the swelling on Barella’s ankle has decreased and the hope of having him available is increasing.

The report from the Milan based news outlet goes on to add that a decision will be made close to the match. They also state that Christian Eriksen is the favourite to come into the starting line-up.
