Inter’s upcoming transfer window will be impacted by their elimination from the UEFA Champions League last night at the group stage according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.
Inter were eliminated from the group stage for the third consecutive season following a goalless draw at home to Shakhtar Donetsk last night.
This was yet another case of Inter struggling to breakdown a team focused on defending and there was a lack of quality to Inter’s play last night at San Siro. Despite coming up against a team who had no natural strikers available, Conte stuck with a three at the back system.
The report from the Milan based news outlet goes on to add that it is perhaps no coincidence that Conte has been eliminated from the group stage three out of five times he has managed a side in the Champions League and never made it past the quarter final stage, this despite having good squads at his disposal.
Gazzetta dello Sport go on to insist that substitutes Alexis Sanchez and Christian Eriksen were brought on too late and having won just once in the group stage it is difficult to describe Inter as a team who are growing.
Inter have went from a Europa League final to being entirely out of Europe and went from winning 5-0 against Shakhtar Donetsk to drawing 0-0 with them twice in the group stage.
The Europa League final last season was supposed to be the basis for growth but it has not happened. The report concludes that Conte can try and ignore what people are saying but will no doubt now be able to hear the disappointment from the Inter fans whose disappointment is absolutely legitmate.
