Former Inter midfielder Benoît Cauet discussed Inter’s current position, Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen and their early elimination from the Champions League in an interview with Italian radio broadcaster Radio MusciaTelevision earlier today.

“I was certainly hoping for a win, but in the end it didn’t come, although Inter had an excellent match.

“We lacked a bit of madness, imagination in the game, the aggressiveness to instill fear in Shakhtar, who were well prepared and knew Conte’s team very well, having already faced them and succeeding in the previous match in drawing with a system of play with everyone in defense.

“In a match like this, therefore, they were well prepared and well positioned on the field.”

He commented on the performance of 28-year-old Dane Christian Eriksen and The Ukrainian side’s 19-year-old goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.

“He could have come on earlier, we can say that now, but whoever came on the field tried to help the team, to overturn the result, something complicated considering that they were holding their ground.

“We saw the opposing goalkeeper, 19 years old, very good, he made two very high level saves, definitely destined for an important future.”

Eriksen, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2024, seems destined to leave the club in the upcoming January transfer window, after only a year in Milan.

The former Tottenham midfielder has not adapted to coach Antonio Conte’s and has consistently disappointed this season in his 11 appearances across Serie A and the Champions League.

A return to the Premier League cannot be ruled out, as well as a potential move to Paris Saint-Germain in a swap deal involving Leandro Paredes.

Inter will be looking to bounce back after their European exit with a win against 12th place Cagliari tomorrow, an important game as Conte’s side look to reclaim second in the league table , hot on the heels of leaders AC Milan.
