Legendary Inter striker Alessandro Altobelli has slammed Inter for the way that they performed in this season’s edition of the UEFA Champions League.

For the third straight season, Inter were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League at the group stage and for the first time in the club’s history they were eliminated from the competition having finished rock bottom of their group, which contained Real Madrid, Borussia Monchengladbach and Shakhtar Donetsk.

“The expedition to Europe was a failure. Inter won only one match out of six and didn’t score a single goal in two games against Shakhtar, how can you think of going through?” Altobelli began an interview with Italian newspaper Quotidiano Sportivo, which appeared in today’s print edition.

“Matches in Europe should be played the opposite of how Inter played against Shakhtar Donetsk. These are challenges, especially some, in which you cannot adopt a waiting strategy.

“It needs you to put pressure on the opponent, have great attachment to the shirt and play. Many times the matches are won with will.

“This year I have saw them play some games like that in the league, which were won with substitutions and reacting once they went behind but it didn’t happen against the Ukrainians.”

Altobelli spent a total of 11 years with Inter between 1977 and 1988 and is one of the greatest goalscorers to have ever worn the Nerazzurri shirt.

The former Italian national team player, who won one Serie A title and two Coppa Italia whilst with Inter, made 465 appearances across all competitions, in which he scored 209 goals – a goal tally bettered only by Giuseppe Meazza, who scored 284 goals for Inter.
