Inter vice president Javier Zanetti discussed his relationship with intercity rivals AC Milan and the futures of both Milanese clubs in an interview with Italian media outlet Pianeta Milan a few days ago.

First, he spoke about his favourite Milanese derby.

“The derby is always a special and very heartfelt match because the two teams from this city face each other. During the whole week we only talk about this match.

“I remember the derby we won 4-0 in 2009, which was a derby where we showed we deservedly won a game against a great opponent, as Milan have always been.”

He touched on his relationship with the Rossoneri fans.

“It was a relationship of great respect and it still is. When Milan fans see me on the streets of the city, they ask me for autographs and photos and this shows that throughout my career I have behaved well.

“There is great respect from them and from me. I have a great relationship with the Milan fans.”

Finally, Zanetti spoke about the current state of the Milanese clubs and their lack of silverware over the last 10 years.

“I think they are moments. I think Milan will come back because I believe the two clubs will do everything they can to get Milanese football back to where it deserves to be. I’m sure Inter and Milan will be great again.”

Inter are currently second in the Serie A table after 14 games with 33 points, only a single point behind intercity rivals and league leaders AC Milan.

The Rossoneri are the only team still undefeated in Europe’s top five leagues, with coach Stefano Pioli managing to maintain momentum despite the absence of talismanic forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The 39-year-old Swedish forward has made six appearances in Serie A so far this season, for a total of 529 minutes. In that time, he has scored 10 goals and provided one assist.
