Italian journalist and transfer market expert Gianluca Di Marzio discussed the future of Inter linked Papu Gomez and if he’ll leave Atalanta next month whilst speaking with Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia earlier today.

“Atalanta have made it clear to Gomez’s agent that they don’t want to give the player away. It will therefore be necessary to pay for him, this is the club’s position at the moment.

“If they ask for €10-12 million it will be difficult to find a new club in Italy that will spend these figures in the winter, but if in January Atalanta will meet the demands of Papu, it will be decided where he can go in our league.”

Di Marzio highlighted how it’s likely that Papu Gomez will still leave Atalanta next month, despite a small cooling down of the tension between him and coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

“Now, according to what is filtering through Atalanta, the waters between Papu, Gasperini and the club seem to have calmed down, so much so that they will try, although it will be difficult, to mend the rift.

“At the moment, however, the most plausible scenario leads to a farewell of the Papu, although it will be necessary to understand what kind of market the Nerazzurri number 10 can have.

“If Atalanta continue to value him at between €8-12 million, it is difficult to think of a future in Serie A, also because Papu, expiring in 2022, earns €3 million per season. In this case, therefore, it is easier to think of a possible farewell with foreign direction.”

The 32-year-old Gomez, who is contracted to the Bergamo based club until 2022, is set to leave Atalanta next month after six and a half years with the club.

He has suffered a complete relationship breakdown with coach Gasperini and was not even called up for the club’s last two games against Roma and Bologna.

The Argentinian forward has made 16 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 1122 minutes. In that time, he’s scored five goals and provided four assists.

Inter have been linked with a possible move for the player, as they look for both a midfielder and a forward.
