Former Juventus and Lazio midfielder Romulo admits he was flattered by Inter’s interest when they tried to sign him last January.

Antonio Conte wanted to add experience in midfield and reportedly identified the Brazilian as one of his targets, having already chased him during his time at Juventus.

The 33-year-old, now a free agent, was happy to hear of the Nerazzurri’s interest but would not have been able to join for one simple reason.

Speaking to IlPosticipo.it, Romulo explained: “Inter wanted me, but I couldn’t sign for them because I had already played for Genoa and Brescia and I couldn’t represent a third team in the same season.

“I was pleased to hear the rumours though because Inter are a great team and because I think it was Conte who wanted me, one of the best coaches in the world.”

Conte wanted to sign Romulo during his final season at Juventus but Hellas Verona did not release the player to move to Turin until the summer of 2014, at which point Massimiliano Allegri had taken over as head coach.

Inter are one point behind Serie A leaders AC Milan at the start of 2021 and will play their first match of the New Year at home to Crotone on Sunday.

The Nerazzurri are chasing an eighth consecutive win in the league after finishing 2020 on a high note domestically.
