Former Atalanta coach Bortolo Mutti discussed the situation surrounding Inter linked Papu Gomez in an interview with Italian media outlet TuttoMercatoWeb a few days ago.

“We have to see if the situation will come back together or not. But I think the team is in good shape in the attacking department, and Matteo Pessina is the ideal player in the middle of the pitch.

“I see Atalanta as a competitive team overall. If Papu were to play, I’d see him playing well at Inter. The Nerazzurri have important strikers and if they lose Christian Eriksen he would be a 3-4-1-2 player.

“From a tactical point of view, Gomez knows how to fit into this role behind the forwards and he is also capable of helping out in defense.”

The 32-year-old Argentinian forward, who is contracted to Atalanta until 2022, has experienced a total relationship breakdown with coach Gian Piero Gasperini and is destined leave the Bergamo based club after six and a half years in this month’s transfer window.

Inter, alongside other interested clubs like Lazio, Torino and Fiorentina are actively following the situation, hoping to sign the talented forward for a low price.

Gomez wanted to leave the club on a free transfer this month and head to another Italian team due to the fact that his family are happily settled in Bergamo, but Atalanta will not let him leave for free and want at least €10 million for him.

The 32-year-old Argentinian forward has made 16 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 1122 minutes. In that time, he has scored five goals and provided four assists.
