Antonio Conte lamented how ‘everything went wrong’ for Inter as they slumped to defeat at Sampdoria.

Goals from former Inter players Antonio Candreva and Keita Balde gave Claudio Ranieri’s side a 2-0 lead at half-time, after Alexis Sanchez saw his penalty saved in the opening minutes of the match.

Stefan de Vrij halved the deficit midway through the second half but Inter were unable to find an equaliser, bringing their eight-game winning streak in Serie A to an end.

“It’s not easy when you go 2-0 down and face an uphill battle like that” Conte said in his post-match press conference at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

“However, we nonetheless created a lot of chances that we should have taken; we did not succeed and so we’re here talking about a defeat.

“It can happen that you go behind but I think it was a bit of a strange and particular sort of match.

“For those who watch football matches we say that everything went wrong for us.

“I don’t think the team got anxious towards the end of the game, we dominated at the beginning and created dangerous chances but we didn’t convert them.

“They scored a penalty and then doubled their advantage with a precise move.

“They were clinical in taking their chances and we congratulate them for that.”

He concluded by summing up his thoughts about the game, which was Inter’s 16th of the 2020-21 Serie A season.

“We deserved something more but instead we go home with a defeat.”

Inter had the chance to go top of the table by winning, even if only for a minimum of a few hours and they will now be looking to arch rivals Juventus to do them a favour by beating AC Milan to avoid the Rossoneri getting further in front of them.

The Nerazzurri will return to Serie A action on Sunday with a tricky match against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.
