Inter must win their upcoming matches to prove that they were simply unfortunate to lose to Sampdoria on Wednesday, according to legendary Italian footballer Alessandro Del Piero.
Antonio Conte’s side fell to a shock 2-1 defeat at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris thanks to goals from former Nerazzurri forwards Antonio Candreva and Keita Balde, ending their eight-match winning streak in Serie A.
“In the match against Sampdoria, Inter were unlucky,” Del Piero remarked while in the studios of Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia during the Sky Calcio Club show.
“If we talk about the future, Conte’s team is facing the most statistically difficult month because in January it is where they always lose or after the break or after the transfer market, which changes the balance of some players.
“To show that the defeat in Genoa was down to misfortune, they must win the next matches and give a response.
“They can’t run into other situations in which they compromise the game due to a sending off or a lack of mentality, the Nerazzurri have to react.”
Del Piero was then asked about the pressure Inter find themselves under and shared his belief that they are better equipped than even his beloved Juventus, who have won the last nine Serie A titles in a row.
“Any team has pressure, not only those who don’t win have it,” he said.
“Inter were made to win this year like they were last year.
“This year I think they are better equipped than Juventus.”
Inter are sitting in second place in the Serie A standings after 16 games played and are one point off of top spot, which is currently occupied by city rivals AC Milan.
Antonio Conte’s side are next in action on Sunday afternoon when they take on third placed Roma away from home.
