Inter are through to the quarterfinal of the Coppa Italia against city rivals AC Milan after defeating Fiorentina 2-1 away after extra time at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence.
The Nerazzurri opened the game carefully in no doubt in part due to the fact that Christian Eriksen was being tried in a deeplying playmaker role in midfield.
Neither team created that much until Alexis Sanchez was brought down and compatriot Arturo Vidal converted from the spot to open his account since joining the Nerazzurri this past summer.
In the beginning of the second half Inter’s Lautaro Martinez had a chance to double the guests lead but failed to even hit the target.
Shortly after that Fiorentina scored the equalizer thanks to a wonderstrike by Christian Koame after some poor defensive clearances by Roberto Gagliardini and Aleksandar Kolarov.
The Nerazzurri continued to create chances but failed to convert with Alexis Sanchez missing a sitter as the match went to extra time.
There, Romelu Lukaku missed a sitter but made amends when latching on to a brilliant Nicolo Barella cross and powering the header in the back of the net.
