Inter have been dealt a blow in their hopes of signing Atalanta captain Papu Gomez, with Italian journalist Luca Marchetti suggesting that La Dea will only sanction a move in Serie A to a non-rival.

Argentina attacking midfielder Gomez has been frozen out at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia after a bitter dispute with coach Gian Pieri Gasperini, leading to a number of clubs, including Inter and Juventus vying for his services.

However, whilst speaking to Italian radio station Radio Deejay earlier today, Marchetti suggested that Inter’s chances of landing Gomez were slim, with Atalanta only ready to sell to a Serie A club they don’t consider a rival for European qualification.

“It is a difficult situation, as Atalanta do not want to let him go to a big name in Italy,” Marchetti claimed. “If Gomez wants to stay in Italy he must choose a team lower down in the table.

“There may be options for him to go abroad, but at 32 years old his chances may be limited.”

Gomez has scored 59 goals in 252 appearances for Atalanta since joining from Ukrainian club Metalist in 2014. The Argentine international played a key role as La Dea qualified for the Champions League for the first time in 2019-20.
