Former Inter defender Riccardo Ferri believes his old side are playing Juventus as equals in the Derby d’Italia.

The two sides meet at San Siro on Sunday evening with both desperately needing a win to hunt down Milan at the top of Serie A.

The Nerazzurri could strike a big blow to Juve’s title ambitions with a win as they’d go seven points clear of the Old Lady, albeit with the champions having a game in hand.

To do that they’ll have to win the Derby d’Italia for the first time since 2016 when Frank de Boer’s side came from behind to triumph at San Siro.

That proved to be a false down and the Dutchman was sacked a few weeks later but Ferri feels Inter are now ready to compete with the Bianconeri as equals.

The legendary defender feels tonight’s game will be huge repercussions for the Scudetto as he praised Antonio Conte for sorting out the backline.

Ferri told Gazzetta dello Sport: “After many years Inter are playing as equals and the league is in play.

“Now the defence are doing well, Skriniar and Bastoni have acquired more awareness of the role.

“They’ve also benefited by getting rid of the attacking midfielder, the balance and distance weren’t right but now there’s a different attitude in ball recovery.

“The match could be decided by individuals and by clarity in the details, on dead balls too not just open play.

“Then you have to know how to read moments and interpret them, as well as having the mental strength to handle drops in concentration and physical issues.”
