Romelu Lukaku’s rise to become one of the greatest strikers in world football is no surprise to his former Anderlecht academy teammate Bryan Verboom.

Lukaku joined Inter in the summer of 2019 in a club record transfer deal from Manchester United and has been in prolific form for the Nerazzurri ever since he arrived in Serie A.

The Belgian national team forward is an irreplaceable focal point of Antonio Conte’s side, leading some to suggest Inter are over-reliant on the 27-year-old.

“It was clear from the beginning that Lukaku was superior to everyone,” Verboom, who now plays for FC Aarau in Switzerland’s second tier, explained in an interview with Belgian news outlet Walfoot.be.

“I’m not very surprised that he went to Inter and became one of the best strikers in the world.

“He does extraordinary things like beating Brazilian Ronaldo’s records at the club, but this doesn’t surprise me.

“He’s a monster, he really is a monster.”

This season Lukaku has scored no less than 17 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions for the Nerazzurri, the most recent of which secured victory in last week’s Coppa Italia last 16 tie at Fiorentina.

The former Chelsea, Everton and West Brom striker, who is also Belgium’s all-time leading goal-scorer with a tally of 57 in 89 caps, has provided three assists at Inter this year.
