Inter sporting director Beppe Marotta is struggling to balance the responsibilities of ensuring the club operates smoothly and challenges for the Serie A title, according to Italian journalist Ivan Zazzaroni.

Writing in today’s newspaper edition of Corriere dello Sport, Zazzaroni suggested that Marotta’s lack of enthusiasm for his role at Inter and the responsibilities he was taking on were in stark contract to his previous position at Juventus.

Marotta left the Bianconeri in October of 2018 to take on the job at Inter in December of the same year and has helped Inter challenge for the Scudetto this season, despite suggestions of increasing financial turmoil at the club.

Inter are just two points behind league leaders AC Milan at the midway point of the season, but have deferred wages to players owed from last July and August.

“Marotta is in trouble, I understand that,” Zazzaroni claimed. “I remember him smiling much more at Juve and not only because he was winning.

“He was at the head of a company that was operating at the top level and this is why he was called to Inter. Perhaps he is afraid of not succeeding, or failing to win a title. He is trying to implement a change in mentality and making the club grow without taking anybody on or creating enemies.”

Inter were unable to capitalise on Milan’s 3-0 defeat to Atalanta yesterday as they laboured to a goalless draw with Udinese, as they chase a first Scudetto since 2010.
