Inter are perhaps even stronger than arch rivals Juventus now, at least in the eyes of legendary Inter midfielder Nicola Berti.

The Nerazzurri are five points clear of Andrea Pirlo’s side in Serie A after beating them 2-0 in the Derby d’Italia two weekends ago.

In an interview, which appeared in today’s print edition of Quotidiano Sportivo, former Italy midfielder Berti began by discussing what the Milan derby means ahead of tonight’s Coppa Italia clash between the two Milanese clubs.

“You always think about the derby,” he insisted.

“Once we lost one in the Coppa Italia, I was so angry.

“The derby is the derby, there is little else to say than that.

“If you lose this match, you’re out of the competition, there’s no chance to make up for it.”

Berti then briefly touched upon the fact that AC Milan and Inter are leading the way together in Serie A, where there is the most open title race in years taking place.

“Finally, there is a rather nice league.

“AC Milan are the real surprise, they got the right signings, they have an important squad.”

Berti then went on to dismiss comparisons between the two great Milanese sides of the late 1980s but did suggested that Inter are perhaps even stronger than Juventus, who have won the last nine titles in a row, now.

“Certainly not, those were very different teams but we are on the right track, I don’t see other teams that can win the Scudetto, although we are still in the first round of games.

“Inter’s win over Juventus showed us they are capable of beating a very strong team who dominated in the last few years in Italy.

“We have bridged the gap between the two teams.

“We are close, perhaps even stronger than Juve now.”

Berti then went on to speak about in-form Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella, a player he has always been quick to praise in the past.

“I have always liked him, I like him to death.

“He plays across the board, with great technique.

“He has something more than the others.

“He reminds me of me a little due to what he knows how to convey, even if in terms of our characters we are a little different.

“He can give ten years of joy to Inter fans and also to the national team.”

Berti, who spent 10 years with Inter between 1988 and 1998, concluded by sharing his views on the possible sale of the club.

“That is still chatter.

“Suning are a very solid group.

“I don’t think they will leave, plus they are working well.

“They are bringing results.

“Unfortunately the COVID-19 pandemic has denied the possibility of doing certain things and we must have patience.”
