Christian Eriksen still has an important role to play at Inter this season, Italian journalist Matteo Marani argued today.

The Denmark national team midfielder has struggled in his time with the Nerazzurri but stepped up when he really needed to last night, scoring an injury-time free-kick to defeat city rivals AC Milan 2-1 and send Inter through to the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia.

Some reports in the media today have suggested that the goal could be the start of a new beginning for the 28-year-old at Inter, who were widely expected to sell Eriksen during the January transfer window.

“Inter bought Eriksen in January 2020, but after yesterday’s goal it can be said that it’s as if they bought him in the January 2021,” Marani argued while present in the studios of Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia.

“He is a player who could come in handy.”

Marani also sang the praises of Eriksen’s midfield teammate Nicolo Barella, who has earned a series of rave reviews for his performances for the Nerazzurri in recent weeks and been labelled in some quarters as Italy’s best midfielder.

“Barella is an extraordinary player,” Marani said.

“He is a big part of Inter and he is really a great player.”

Antonio Conte’s side will face either Juventus or SPAL in a two-legged semi-final next month, with the first leg scheduled to take place next week.
