Inter deservedly won a ‘beautiful match’ against AC Milan in last night’s Coppa Italia quarter-final, according to Nerazzurri defender Stefan de Vrij.

Antonio Conte’s side went into the half-time break trailing 1-0 in the Derby della Madonnina after a Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal but were brought level with 20 minutes left by Romelu Lukaku’s penalty.

Late substitute Christian Eriksen then provided the winner for with a trademark free kick deep into injury time, sending Inter through to a two-legged semi-final with either Juventus or SPAL.

“It was a fair result, we produced the performance, we believed until the end and we deservedly won,” De Vrij told Inter’s official club broadcaster Inter TV after the match at San Siro.

“We all know how important a derby is, especially this one here.

“It is a beautiful match for us players to play, we care for the club, for the team and for the fans.

“We are happy with the result.”

Asked whether he would rather win a match as close as this or win it more convincingly, he simply responded: “I just like winning, I don’t care how.”

In conclusion the former Lazio defender, who was named the best defender in Serie A last season, was asked if Inter’s thoughts are now immediately back on Serie A.

“Yes, the match against Benevento is very important, an important week awaits us and we must be ready.”

Inter will be looking to close in on their city rivals in the league standings after striking an important psychological blow in the second derby of the season.
