Inter coach Antonio Conte had two high-profile midfielders on his January transfer wish list before having to admit defeat, according to an Italian media report today.

As per CalcioMercato.com, the former Italian national team coach wanted Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante or Paris Saint-Germain’s Leandro Paredes signed to bolster the club’s midfield ranks.

However, due to Inter’s current financial situation, Conte has been forced to make a virtue of necessity which has meant playing Christian Eriksen as an alternative to Marcelo Brozovic in recent weeks.

Eriksen was trialled in a deep-lying play-maker position in the Coppa Italia tie at Fiorentina on January 13, having previously been expected to leave the club in January.

Inter have not made any signings at first-team level, nor have they permanently moved any players on during the course of this month’s winter window.

Following Inter’s Coppa Italia quarter-final win over AC Milan on Tuesday, Conte admitted that nobody will be leaving nor will anybody be coming in before the end of January.
