Squad depth and lack of European football commitments means that Inter are the favourites to win the Serie A title, at least according to one Italian media report today.

As per Gazzetta dello Sport‘s online edition, although Antonio Conte’s side are only sat in second place in the table, there are many aspects that put them in pole position to become Italian champions again for the first time since 2010.

While league leaders AC Milan are having an amazing season and performing beyond even the most optimistic of expectations and are not obliged to win, as many believe Inter are, they are still not favourites for the two reasons mentioned above.

Due to being eliminated from the Champions League by finishing bottom of their group, Inter did not drop down to the Europa League and are therefore able to focus solely on the league, other than the Coppa Italia, with a two-legged semi-final against Juventus coming up in February.

Inter have a competitive and deep squad which perhaps only lacks a dependable back-up striker for Romelu Lukaku.

Conte’s side are two points off the top as they head into Saturday’s match at home to Benevento.
