A proposed deal that would have seen Roma striker Edin Dzeko move to Inter in exchange for Nerazzurri forward Alexis Sanchez failed due to Inter’s strict wage budget.

Having fallen out with Giallorossi coach Paulo Fonseca, Dzeko had been offered to Inter and the capital club had hoped to bring in Sanchez in return.

However, whilst the two forwards earn similar wages, with Dzeko on €500,000 more than Sanchez at €7.5 million per season, tax regulations in Italy mean Inter would have been required to pay an additional €1.5m for Dzeko, as reported in today’s newspaper edition of Tuttosport.

This is due to a tax relief on foreign imports that sees Inter required to pay less following Sanchez’s arrival from English club Manchester United on a free transfer last summer.

With the Nerazzurri determined to cut costs during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, director Piero Ausilio made it clear to opposite number at Roma Tiago Pinto that they were unable to extend their wage budget.

Meanwhile, Roma rejected the offer of Andrea Pinamonti or Ionut Radu on loan as makeweights to cover the additional €1.5m, culminating in the collapse of the deal.
