Inter legend Nicola Berti wants Christian Eriksen to get a run in the side after the midfielder’s heroics in Tuesday’s Milan derby.

Reports suggest Antonio Conte will start the Denmark international in tonight’s Serie A match at home to Benevento, in the hope Eriksen can build momentum after his 97th-minute free-kick against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia.

Berti believes it’s time the 28-year-old had a chance to show what he can do for the Nerazzurri on a consistent basis.

“What can I say about Eriksen, he made me ecstatic in the derby!” Berti told Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview for Friday’s print edition.

“Then we can talk about the rest, for example, his consistency.

“The position he plays on the pitch comes later, first of all we need to let him play five or six games in a row.

“Let’s trust him, the boy has quality.”

Berti, who made 312 appearances during a 10-year spell at Inter, also had words of praise for his midfield successor Nicolo Barella, a player supporters have often compared to himself.

Asked whether he was better than the former Cagliari man, Berti replied: “Good question!

“Do you know what I think? Nicolò has more technique than me, I was more physically devastating.

“In any case, I am delighted to see him performing at these levels.

“I have had faith in him since the day he signed and I like him.

“I very much like Stefano Sensi too.”

Berti also shared his thoughts on the job Conte has done at Inter and whether he is satisfied with the former Juventus boss’s 18 months in charge.

“I’m definitely satisfied with the job Conte has done,” he assured.

“For me his Juve past has never been a problem.”

Inter sit two points behind league leaders AC Milan ahead of tonight’s match against Benevento, although the Rossoneri could be five points clear by kick-off with Stefano Pioli’s side visiting Bologna this afternoon.
