Former Inter striker Alessandro Altobelli has lavished praise on Nerazzurri midfielder Nicolo Barella, claiming the 23-year-old has made impressive progress since joining the club.

Italian international Barella arrived at Inter from hometown club Cagliari in 2019 and has caught the eye at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, playing a key role in yesterday’s 4-0 victory over Benevento in Serie A.

Speaking on Italian television station Rai earlier today, Altobelli discussed Barella’s progress at Inter and admitted he was impressed with the way the midfielder had developed over the past two seasons.

“Since joining Inter, Barella has made an incredible leap in quality, both physically and technically,” Altobelli claimed.

“He defends very well and attacks even better, whilst he is charismatic and participates in the build up of the team. I think his growth is a good thing for Inter.”

Barella has made 69 appearances for Inter since initially joining on loan in the summer of 2019, finding the net six times. His most recent goal came in a 2-0 Serie A victory over Juventus earlier this month.

Altobelli, meanwhile, represented the Nerazzurri 317 times from 1977 to 1988, lifting the Scudetto in 1980 and scoring 209 goals for the club. He remains Inter’s second highest goalscorer in all competitions.
