Inter’s transfer window is closed and they never negotiated with Roma to swap Alexis Sanchez and Edin Dzeko, chief executive Beppe Marotta confirmed this morning.

The Nerazzurri have not signed anyone in January due to economic difficulties, with only Radja Nainggolan leaving on loan for Cagliari.

In the past few days speculation was rife that the Bosnian and Chilean could be exchanged on a six month loan swap basis but negotiations, as per Marotta, never took off.

“There was some audacity from the agents of the two players but beyond a meeting between the directors, negotiations never began,” Marotta explained to Italian broadcaster Sportitalia.

“In compliance with Inter’s indications and guidelines, we still confirm today that there will be no arrivals or departures and that we can count on an important group of players.”

Marotta was also asked whether Christian Eriksen is now central in the club’s project given his turnaround in recent weeks, which comes after Marotta previously said the Dane was not functional to Antonio Conte’s ideas and would likely leave this month.

“When you are at a great club there are no starters and reserves,” Marotta argued.

“Conte had an idea to change his position and Eriksen himself is a serious professional.”

Inter have not spent a penny this window and the former Juventus executive was asked if he has ever had such a transfer window before in his long career.

“We are in an extraordinary period, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a strong impact and the model of the past is not sustainable now.

“Right now we have to deal with the cost of labour and it needs to be reviewed, so nobody risks going bust.

“We will no longer see negotiations with large numbers for players and large wages.”

In conclusion, Marotta, who has been with Inter for a few years now, was asked if he could confirm that Inter’s January transfer window is closed to which he responded: “Absolutely, yes.”
