Inter and AC Milan’s plans to build a new stadium to replace San Siro risk being further delayed by the current uncertainty surrounding the Nerazzurri, according to a report in the Italian media today.

As per La Repubblica’s print edition, the mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala is in direct contact with both clubs over their project concerning a new ground, for which they jointly submitted an initial study to the city council back in 2019.

Sala and the council have recently made it known to both clubs, however, that they will not provide a response on the eventual ‘public interest’ of replacing the current San Siro until it becomes clear who Inter’s owners will be going forward.

In short, the report said, the council would consider it inappropriate to entrust such an important strategic public area and real estate project, which is reportedly worth €1.2 billion, to an as yet unknown party.

La Repubblica’s story was published before news broke on Monday afternoon that Suning had ended their talks with BC Partners over investing into the club.

In any case, this will not make any difference to the speed at which the San Siro project progresses, because it remains impossible to know at this stage what Inter’s long-term future looks like at corporate level.
