Beppe Bergomi is confident Christian Eriksen will become a more important figure for Inter now he has switched to his new play-maker position.

In the past few matches, the 28-year-old has been utilised as a deep lying ‘regista’ as opposed to his natural attacking midfielder role, performing well during Saturday’s 4-0 win over Benevento in Serie A.

Eriksen has made 16 appearances in all competitions but Bergomi believes he could be in line to start more for Antonio Conte’s side now.

“In his new role, Eriksen has began to climb the pecking order,” he explained in an interview with Italian radio station Lady Radio today.

“He gives Inter an extra option from set pieces which could prove to be pivotal.”

Asked about Inter’s non-existent January transfer window, Bergomi, who spent the whole of his career with Inter, simply pointed out: “We know about the economic difficulties, the club could not do anything.”

Bergomi was also asked about Inter’s Serie A match at Fiorentina on Friday, admitting Conte could hardly afford to rest players for the trip to the Stadio Artemio Franchi when they host Juventus in the Coppa Italia tonight.

“In Florence it is always a difficult game for the Nerazzurri but first you have the match with Juventus, it’s never a trivial match and you can’t afford to rest players,” he warned.

Inter’s semi-final first leg against the Bianconeri kicks off in just under three hours’ time, with the return fixture taking place in Turin next Tuesday.

The last Derby d’Italia meeting in the league was won 2-0 by Inter on January 17, thanks to goals from Arturo Vidal and Nicolo Barella.
