Zlatan Ibrahimovic is in danger of a lengthy suspension after his comments towards Romelu Lukaku in last week’s Milan derby, according to an Italian media report today.

As per Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition, the Italian Football Federation yesterday opened an investigation into the bust-up which saw the former Manchester United teammates share some choice words during Inter’s 2-1 win in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals.

At the time both players received a booking, but punishment may not stop there depending on what the federal prosecutors find.

Referee Paolo Valeri will be questioned and footage, both video and audio, of the incident will also be examined and should everything not be clear from these recordings, things will proceed.

Ibrahimovic could potentially be found in violation of article 28 of the FIGC’s sports justice code and it must be decided whether his comments represented discriminatory behaviour or serious unsportsmanlike conduct.

His ‘go do your voodoo s****’ comment could potentially land him in hot water, meaning he could be banned for 10 Coppa Italia matches or face a long time-based suspension.

Lukaku’s comments will also be examined and potential punishments may also be considered for the Belgian, who was clearly irate at Ibrahimovic.

While Inter condemned the actions of their player, they believe their player was in fact attacked in a personal manner seeing as there were references to Lukaku’s mother.
