Former Inter defender Riccardo Ferri has praised midfielder Nicolo Barella after his performance in the Nerazzurri’s 2-0 win over Fiorentina yesterday.

Barella continued his fine recent form to set Inter on their way to victory as he curled in from outside the area on the half hour mark to open the scoring. Ivan Perisic netted in the second half to send Inter top of Serie A, ahead of AC Milan’s match against Crotone tomorrow.

In an interview with Italian radio station Radio Deejay earlier today, Ferri admitted that he was pleased to see the growth of Barella since arriving from Cagliari in 2019, whilst also touching on fellow midfielder Arturo Vidal’s underwhelming display.

“I would agree that Barella is the best Italian midfielder. He has matured in his quality, his personality and the way he plays. He has really grown up and developed well,” Ferri claimed.

“Vidal lacks consistency and when he is having a bad game like yesterday he struggles to make a difference. But when he is on form he adds something different to the other midfielders.”

Ferri, who represented Inter from 1981 to 1994, made 290 appearances for the Nerazzurri after coming through the club’s academy, and went on to lift the Scudetto and the UEFA Cup twice.

An Italian international, the 57-year-old was a member of the squad that came third on home soil at the 1990 World Cup.
